The traditional local mosque programme — what each activity is, and how it works in a British mosque.
Encouraging fellow Muslims towards prayer and religious practice, most visibly through Gasht (walking locally) and short talks in the mosque. The invitation is gentle, brief and free of argument.
In the UK: Arranged with the mosque committee's permission; conducted with respect for privacy, safeguarding rules and a polite refusal.
A daily sitting in which a book of narrations and virtues is read aloud, followed by a short discussion of the six points. Usually 20–40 minutes.
In the UK: Many UK mosques hold this after Fajr, Asr or Maghrib. English readings and translations are increasingly common for younger and revert attendees.
Personal worship: prayer with attention, Qur'an recitation, remembrance and supplication — the private half of the effort, without which the public half is empty.
In the UK: Encouraged individually at home and in the mosque; not organised as a group ritual beyond the ordinary congregational prayers.
Practical service to the mosque and to one another: cleaning, cooking, setting out mats, helping elderly attendees, welcoming visitors.
In the UK: Works alongside mosque volunteers and existing rotas; anyone working with children or vulnerable adults should follow the mosque's own vetting policy.
A short daily or weekly meeting in which those present consult on the local programme: who will visit where, who will read, what needs attention.
In the UK: Decisions affecting the mosque building, finances or public activity belong to the mosque's trustees or committee, not to the consultation.
The five activities are meant to reinforce one another: consultation decides the day's plan, learning supplies the content, worship supplies the sincerity, service holds the group together, and invitation carries it to the neighbourhood.
