Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi
A brief, respectful introduction to the founder of the Tablighi Jamaat movement (رحمه الله).
Early life
Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi (رحمه الله) was born in 1885 in Kandhla, a small town in the Muzaffarnagar district of northern India. He was raised in a household deeply engaged in Islamic scholarship and personal piety.
Scholarly training
He studied under his father, brother and other teachers, and later graduated from Darul Uloom Deoband. He was also strongly influenced spiritually by the scholars of Saharanpur.
Origin of the Tablighi effort
During his teaching work in the Mewat region — an area then facing significant religious and social challenges — Maulana Ilyas became deeply concerned about the state of basic Islamic practice among ordinary Muslims: prayer, faith, character and knowledge of the essentials of the religion.
From these concerns, around 1926, the effort now widely known as Tablighi Jamaat gradually took shape. Its emphasis was simple and practical: encourage Muslims to leave their daily preoccupations for short periods and dedicate time to Salah, learning, remembrance of Allah, self-reform and inviting others peacefully to the same.
Method and character
- Grassroots, mosque-based effort — never political.
- Personal reform first: the caller reforms themselves as they invite others.
- Peaceful, gentle invitation — never coercion or debate.
- Consultation (mashwara), sincerity of intention and humility.
Passing and legacy
Maulana Ilyas passed away in 1944 (1363 AH). The effort he initiated has since spread through many countries. Later scholars from his family and companions — including his son Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Kandhlawi and Maulana In'amul Hasan — continued and organised the work.
