An independent Islamic community platform

Rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah. Focused on gentle reminder, learning and community.

What Is Tablighi Jamaat?

Tablighi Jamaat is a global grassroots Islamic revival movement that encourages Muslims to strengthen their faith, establish regular Salah, seek Islamic knowledge, improve their character and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Its principal practical method is Khuruj, meaning temporarily going out with a small Jamaat for prayer, learning, Da‘wah, reflection and service.

Is Tablighi Jamaat a Sect or Membership Organisation?

Tablighi Jamaat does not generally operate through formal membership cards, paid membership or a conventional global registration system. People from different Muslim communities and schools of thought may participate in its activities. Participation is voluntary, and individuals are free to take part or stop taking part.

It does not generally use the formal membership, centralised command or exclusive admission structure associated with conventional organisations. The movement is decentralised, with local, regional and international arrangements that may differ.

Who founded Tablighi Jamaat?

Tablighi Jamaat was founded by Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi in India during the 1920s, with 1926 commonly used as the starting date of the organised effort. He was concerned about limited Islamic knowledge and religious practice among Muslim communities, particularly in Mewat. After returning from Hajj, he expanded a practical mosque-based effort centred on Salah, learning, Da‘wah, companionship and personal reform. Read more on our founder page.

How did the name “Tablighi Jamaat” develop?

The name “Tablighi Jamaat” was not originally intended as the formal name of an exclusive organisation. The expression broadly means a group engaged in conveying or communicating the religious message. Over time, the public increasingly used the term to describe the movement, and the name became widely established.

The founder emphasised that Da‘wah and personal reform were responsibilities connected to the wider Muslim community rather than the private ownership of one organisation.
